How to protect the skin from pollution?
Our skin is attacked every day by pollution. And not just in big cities, indeed. But how to effectively fight and defend your epidermis from pollutants? We make the point with the dermatologist Philippe Deshayes
Blackheads, dull complexions, allergies, acne or dehydration ... The impact of pollutants on the skin is vast. It is scientifically proven that pollution is one of the factors of premature skin aging and skin damage.Even if it affects more those who live in the city, pollution is also present in the countryside. The explanations and advice of the dermatologist Philippe Deshayes.
What are the harmful pollutants for the skin?
Philippe Deshayes. The main pollutants are the fine particles suspended in the air. They appear for example in the form of a black and greased patina on a white table in the garden in an urban area. But they also come from products that are spread in fields and vineyards, such as manure and pesticides, from exhaust gases (nitric oxide) emitted by vehicles, and from ozone (O3).
What are the effects of this pollution on the skin?
The first symptoms are irritation and inflammation of the skin, which becomes sensitive and intolerant. This is explained by the alteration of the lipid layer on the skin, which changes its role as a protective barrier. Also the quality of the sebum produced is modified: the sebum no longer has a skin protection role but accumulates in the orifices of the pores dilating them, which causes the appearance of blackheads. All this helps to dry the skin, making it sensitive.
This oxidation effect has consequences even deeper: combined with the harmful effects of UV rays, it can cause the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmented areas, especially where pollution is more present.
What would you recommend to protect your skin from everyday pollution?
We must act on three levels. Start by carefully cleaning the skin to remove all the particles that have been deposited during the day. Better to use a product that requires a rinsing, more effective. That said, if the sensitive skin does not tolerate it, it is possible to replace it with a dermopulent product to be applied by massaging gently and for a long time with the fingers, followed by a thermal application for an accurate and emollient rinse. Then, it is essential to hydrate well. A moisturizer must allow rebuilding of the skin barrier to improve defenses against pollutants, while at the same time acting to calm skin irritation. Finally, do not forget to apply an effective sunscreen (SPF50 +), since the aggression of polluting agents is reinforced by that of UV rays and in particular UVA.
Are there any effective products to combat pollution?
A thorough cleaning and moisturizing products that reconstitute the skin protection barrier are the best allies of the skin. Better to stay away from overly aggressive products such as scrubs and peels . They are often badly tolerated by the skin because it is too sensitive and reactive.
Does nutrition play a role in skin protection? If so, what to recommend?
Since we know how pollution affects our skin by oxidizing it, antioxidant foods are recommended. Also all foods that contain vitamin C (parsley, bell pepper, lemon) and vitamin A (wheat germ oil, walnuts, hazelnuts, olive oil) are recommended.
